Where We Work

The Golden Land

Why we focus on Myanmar

Myanmar is one of the poorest countries on earth. A nation of 60 million people, most of whom are hard-working, enterprising small-plot farmers. Most still live in poverty, lack electricity, access to financial services, and the technology to be more productive. It is a land of immense need, alongside tremendous opportunity.

We've chosen to focus our work here because we believe that it takes a deep knowledge of a place and its people to have a chance at solving the complex problems of poverty and economic development.

After nearly five decades of being one of the most isolated countries in the world, Myanmar is now opening up to the outside world. It's a key moment in the country's long history. Myanmar is far behind its neighbours. It will take years of sustained effort, wise leadership and efficient use of investments to rebuild the nation and lift millions out of poverty.

That's why we're here for the long haul.
