Ka Nyin Chaung Village
The previous footpath was prone to flooding in the rainy season. Students from the four neighbouring villages would sometimes have to swim through paddy fields to get to the nearest secondary school.
??Before the footpath, the hospital was an hour away by boat, and that was only if the tide was right. Now, we can get there in 20 minutes by motorbike. When my baby was sick it was such a relief to get help so quickly.??

Boh Kone Village
The old bridge broke during Nargis when a tree fell on it. Without it, travel was much more difficult. The new one connects two villages.

Kan Gyi Village
Before, there was just a tiny wooden dock here. It was unsafe and required costly annual repairs. Bigger boats can now dock at the village and trade is easier.
"The NGO, 'River Doctors', can dock their hospital boat here, now we have a larger jetty. They come once a month and provide everyone with healthcare. This is invaluable as the nearest hospital is a good 2 hours away.
We can reach the clinic, the school, the market and our friends so easily now. We don't feel so remote anymore."

Thit Pyar Chaung Village
The bridge connects 3 villages directly, and is used by people in 8 villages to reach their nearest school and hospital. The bridge that was here before had been dismantled to allow boats to cross. People would have to wade or swim across.
"When my baby was sick, we could get her to the hospital so fast. We borrowed a motorbike from someone in a neighbouring village. They could only get to my village because of the new bridge and footpath."

Over 200 students from the two connected villages use this footpath everyday.
"The biggest benefits are socioeconomic. Before with just boat access it would take 3-5 days for goods to get to Yangon. Now we can get there by road it??s only a day trip so our goods are more marketable. The prices also fluctuate so quickly that we can now choose when to go to market depending on what the price is that we can get. We're like proper business people."

Wae Daunt Village

Wet Kwin Village
The new bridge replaces a broken wooden bridge that couldn't carry the weight of a motorbike driving across it. People would travel by boat instead and be restricted by the tide.

U Khin Maung Than was the first adopter in his village. He was struggling financially as his house needed repairs and his only son had left to find work up country. He tested the technique on three of his four acres and noticed that his paddy was healthier and "more beautiful" within just ten days. He tells everyone he meets about the technique and most of his village have started using it.
"Before, my plot produced 35-40 straps of long beans every two days, but now the yield has almost doubled to 60 straps so I earn more. I have three daughters in school so if my income level stayed the same as before, we would be in hardship."

Mi Chaung Aing Village Library
Mi Chaung Aing Village CBO members collectively bought two lights for villagers to use when working on their footpath project at night. When the project was complete they decided to use one of these to light a small library in the village. The small purpose built library is free for everyone to use but the school children use it most. They go there to read and study by light until late, after they return home from school.

Daw Than Aye lives alone and recently suffered a stroke that has left her body too weak to even complete basic tasks around the house. To help her at night, her neighbours collected some money and bought her a solar light. It saves her around $2 a month in torch battery fees, an unmanageable amount, now that she can't work.

Daw Aye Aye Myint and her family use the S1 to visit relatives and friends in the village, for the children to study at night, for household chores, and to travel at night. The thing that Daw Aye Aye Myint values the most is the safety that light brings. One night her 12 year old son was walking back from the field with the light and spotted a poisonous snake in the grass. Without the light he would have almost certainly have been bitten but, with the light he was able to avoid it.
"I couldn't afford the big battery box and lights that other farmers take to the fields to thresh seeds at night so I would only use the moon. This limited my productivity. The S250 is so strong I can use it in the fields even at monsoon time."

U Aung Moe's summer rice had ion toxity diseasing his rice and he was about to burn it all which would have left him in huge debt. The FAS team came to visit his farm on their way to another farm and assessed the problem for him. 7 acres of U Khin Maung Than's land was being destroyed by armyworms. He consulted the FAS team and they taught him about water management and meem pesticide. This solution cost him just $4 per acre and saved him over $300 in wasted crops.

The previous footpath connecting this village was worn and muddy and almost impassable in the monsoon. Old people were unable to travel to the monastery and children could not go to school during this season. With the footpath, all of this changed.
"I worked hard to get money for my family's food and for the renovation of our house. During the project, some workers took days off but I wanted to earn more, so I didn't take any. I'm proud that I was part of the project. In the past, when we travelled from our village to the market villages nearby we had trouble walking on the narrow and slippery paddy field banks. Now, we have big and strong embankment, so could walk over that. There are so many benefits that will last a long time."

It was very difficult for farmers to manage the water in this region before the embankment. They would spend their nights watching the tides and building temporary embankments. It was a full time job and if they missed the tide it would flood their land and ruin their crops. The embankment means that they don't need to watch at night and can spend their time more productively.
"We have no land and earn a living working for farmers. When they can't grow crops we don't have work so the embankment was an amazing opportunity for us. We worked for 7 days and earned enough to purchase a big rice bag, and oil, chili, and onions for the kitchen and I was able to settle all the debts. In the next season the farmers could grow more and my husband didn't have to leave my family to find work. I was so happy."

The bamboo bridge that was in this village before had been problematic for a number of reasons. It was unstable and more than one person had drowned from falling off it in to the river. Motorbikes could not cross it and long journeys had to be taken by boat, which sometimes would capsize due to being overcrowded.
"What can I say more than thank you! I thought that, with these heavy debt burdens, and this (once) useless farmland, that my life was hopeless. But now I'm succeeding! My land, which once only made me 15 baskets of a paddy a season now can make me 250 baskets. My land is valuable, and I am valuable to my family."

U Win Shwe had been unable to grow monsoon paddy successfully for over 21 years but he didn't know why.Because of his constant failures on the land he was in huge amounts of debt, but also couldn't sell, or even trade his fields as it was thought worthless. The FAS identified serious Ufra on his land and helped him to cure and prevent the disease. It took a few months but eventually his land was healthy again. All of the other villagers saw the success of the techniques and now use them on their own land.
"I learnt about the FAS team from my friend who lives in another village and knew I needed their advice. They were really eager to help me, even though I don??t live in their project area. I will always use the techniques they gave me. This knowledge is so valuable to us poor farmers."

The result was, for U Win Shwe??s farmland 4.5 acres , in 2009 before the treatments- the yield was less than 15 baskets, in 2010 after the treatments, the yield became 250 baskets.
"You don't need to ask whether we were tired. We worked hard and of course it was hard but, in the evenings when we saw our earnings, our tiredness disappeared. U Maung Maung saw the pump first at his local monastery. Since he bought it, he has noticed that he can get three or four times more water to his plot every morning. With this reduced workload he can save money on labour and also spend more time on his other crops.
